18 Mar PRESS RELEASE: WORLD PEACE VOLUNTEERS ADVICE’S POLICE AND POLITICAL PARTIES – 5TH FEBRUARY, 2012
The World Peace Volunteers is a non political civil society organization aimed at promoting world peace through promoting human rights, rule of law, consolidation, entrenching of democracy and good governance through the observation of elections, conflict resolution etc., in Ghana and the world at large. As their motto goes: Violence, an enemy to Development, the organization firmly has the conviction that in the interest of peace and resonant democracy, activities of politicians should be devoid of acts that can impart negatively on the peace we are experiencing in the country. In a press conference in Accra on Sunday, 5th February, 2012, Mr. Seth Osei Acheampong, president of World Peace Volunteers said that with the current outburst of unfavorable information from the interim report of the (EOCO), there is bound to be chaos in the country if the general leadership of the two main political parties, the NPP and the NDC do not bridle their tongues and restrain themselves from acts that can lead to violence.
He said, the police, who are the peacemakers of the country, have a great mission in the turn of events. Following the arrest of Mr. Alfred Agbesi Woyome, the core brain behind the woyome story, which is drawing people from the NDC and the Volta Region to protest against the arrest since they believe he should have first been invited, the spin that the police will apply same practice to some NPP former officials, is possible.
“My friends, if the some members of the NDC and Volta regional faithful who have a problem with the way the police are going about their duties, move over in their numbers to the Police Head quarters to seek for justice come into contact with some NPP members who will also throng to the Police Headquarters if any of their members is arrested, what do you think will happen”? Mr. Acheampong asked.
‘Judging from the way both parties are throwing accusations at each other for the loss caused the state, the Police, which is the only mediator in this case, must observe their duties professionally, to forestall any insurgence’.
He further cautioned radio communicator to desist from further denigrating dialogue which has the tendency of creating more trouble. He expressed dissatisfaction at the way the leaders of NPP and NDC are making the work of the World Peace Volunteers burdensome. “As we move around the length and breadth of the country preaching peace and encouraging the masses to ensure a violence free election come December 2012, the two parties continue to use harsh and abusive words at each other diminishing the confidence of many in the upcoming elections”, says Mr. Acheampong.
